Icom IC-M23 Buoyant VHF Marine Transceiver – A Real Life Saver! December 6, 2012

Icom Australia  recently received information from a dealer in Kiribati relating to Icom’s IC-M23 proving invaluable in a maritime emergency.

From AT3R Marine Services:

“On the 27th May 2012, MV Ocean Star (a small sized Kiribati registered general cargo ship of about 20meters in length) left Betio port bound for Beru island. At 0800hrs in the morning of 29th May 2009, MV Ocean Star was anchoring at Taboiaki village at Beru island after a three day voyage from Tarawa, the capital of Kiribati.

Because there wasn’t anywhere for the ship to dock at Beru island, the crew were forced to anchor and to use a small aluminium boat to deliver the cargo ashore.

The boat was manned by two crew members and they brought an IC-M23 Buoyant VHF Marine Transceiver that they had just purchased from AT3R Marine Services in Tarawa prior sailing for Beru island.

On their final trip to return to the ship, the boat was caught up in heavy waves and immediately capsized. The distance to the ship from where they capsized was about 160 meters away. The two crew members were able to swim and were very surprised to see that the IC-M23 was floating by and flashing. They swam for it and by surprise, they couldn’t believe that when they called for rescue, it was still operational and was answered by the Captain, meaning they were both rescued safely by another boat.

When the ship came back to Tarawa, the main port, they called us at the office. The crew and Captain were very thankful for the Icom IC-M23, which in fact did save the lives of the two crew members.

They praised Icom products and mentioned that it was indeed a very reliable radio, which was built to strict quality standards.”

The images show the MV Ocean star, as well as the two men holding the IC-M23 Buoyant VHF Marine Transceiver which helped them in their time of need.

Brockenhurst College Use Icom Two Way Marine Radios For On the Water Training

Icom two way marine radios have become an important tool for Brockenhurst College, a foremost provider of maritime training in the south of England. The college uses Icom IC-M35 Buoyant VHF Marine Transceivers to assist in the tuition of their maritime apprentices and RYA students on the water.

Icom two way marine radios have become an important tool for Brockenhurst College, a foremost provider of maritime training in the south of England. The college uses Icom IC-M35 Buoyant VHF Marine Transceivers to assist in the tuition of their maritime apprentices and RYA students on the water.

Gary Hales, Head of Marine Technology at Brockenhurst College (www.brock.ac.uk/ ), ‘The maritime department was created about 18 months ago. We now have 6 staff who cover a wide range of subjects which includes marine engineering, boatbuilding, composites, marine upholstery and of course RYA courses which we provide down at Hengistbury Head. The age range we cater for is 16 plus…our oldest student is 60 years old. All our courses are full and our marine engineering courses are oversubscribed by 200%.’

Pete Jowell, Head of Technology at Hengistbury Outdoor Centre which is part of the College said, ‘Brockenhurst College uses the IC-M35 Buoyant VHF Marine Transceiver in our on the water training; a lot of the students come down here and learn to sail as part of their curriculum. If they are learning to become a boat builder or marine engineer, the sailing environment provides the relevancy to what they will do in the future.’

He added, ‘the Icom radios we use are important to us because they allow us to communicate on the water, letting us pass on relevant information to make training more effective and making sure our students are safe. They provide a very good safety point especially as most of our students start from 16.’

Asked why they use Icom, Peter Jowell said, ‘the radios have become more and more important. It wasn’t until two years ago that we had VHF marine radios. Before that we had little licence free walkie talkies…two way radios that left a lot to be desired…so nobody ever bothered using them. It took a while for everyone to get use to using VHF but now it is a common tool that we all use…so useful.’

Peter added, ‘Icom was here when I joined the centre and I have found it to be a very good product and Icom UK have provided really good backup.’

£100 Fixed Penalty Notices for Companies Who Fail to Renew Their Two Way Business Radio Licenses November 27, 2012

Two way business radio channels have reached saturation point in most cities in the UK. With 43,000 business radio licenses in use, Ofcom, the organisation in charge of spectrum assignment and enforcement have produce several initiatives to safeguard this vital resources to the UK economy. One such measure is to penalize companies who are operating illegally. Companies that fail to renew their Business Radio Licences now face the prospect of having to pay a fixed penalty of £100. This new initiative should help to reduce levels of interference from unlicensed users and improve spectrum allocation.

The new enforcement process involves a sliding scale of action. First Ofcom will contact those who fail to renew. If, after reasonable opportunity, the licence holder has still not paid the renewal fee, the licence is revoked. Then, if the user is found to be still operating, action may be taken, escalating through the issue of fixed penalty and possible prosecution through the criminal courts.

The fixed penalty notices that Ofcom issues operate in a similar way to those issued for parking offences – they are sent to alleged offenders by post, who then have one month to respond.

Initially focusing on business radio, Ofcom will consider widening this to other users in due course. Ofcom has written to all Radio Spectrum Licence holders to remind them of the need to renew their licences.
