I was recently going through my photographs when I found this really obscure picture of an Icom sponsored Buoy. The picture was taken during Ramsgate Week as couple of years ago. The buoy is located just off the Ramsgate coast which is in the South east of England.

Many famous sailors make Icom their first choice for Marine VHF radio communications. One such user is Paralympian John Robertson who recently represented Team GB at the London Paralympics Games. John, a keen sailor for 30 years was accompanied by Hannah Stodel (jib trim and tactics) and Stephen Thomas (mainsheet) and represented Great Britain in the Paralympics Keelboat class. Previously the team had represented Team GB at both Athens and Beijing.
John and his team have been using Icom radios for the last 18 years and currently use the Icom IC-M71 Handheld VHF. He said, ‘The IC-M71 was invaluable to us allowing us to communicate with our coach in all conditions, letting us pass on relevant information to make training more effective.’
He added, ’We use Icom as they are the best bit of kit in the marketplace. If they are used by the Coastguard and Lifeboat crews, they must be good enough for us.’
John became the first skipper in the history of disabled Sonar Sailing to helm his crew to back-to-back IFDS World titles in 2005 & 2006.

Icom UK Ltd will again be attending the RSGB HF Convention and showcasing its very latest range of Amateur radio and D-STAR equipment.
The IC-7100, an exciting, innovative multiband transceiver was unveiled recently at the Tokyo Ham Fair. Icom UK are hoping to have the first one in Europe at this show!! The IC-7100 offers many exciting features including touch screen control and a first for an Icom rig…the addition of the 70 MHz band. To maintain its commitment to D-STAR, all versions of the IC-7100 will come with standard D-STAR DV mode.
Following the D-STAR theme, Icom UK plan to show a prototype of a new D-STAR handheld radio. The ID-51A/E D-STAR handheld radio is a dualband, an evolution of Icom’s popular ID-31A/E UHF D-STAR Handheld. It will be capable of both VV / UU 144MHz + 430MHz dual band operation. The ID-51A/E will also include the much praised menu-driven user interface of the ID-31A/E series with a much bigger LCD screen. The ID-51A/E will also feature integrated GPS & D-STAR as well as IPx7 waterproofing, SD-Card slot and slim body as found on the ID-31A/E.
The RSGB convention takes place at Horwood House near Milton Keynes for three days between 12-14 October 2012 and will include many lectures on subjects such as HF, DX and contesting.
A full range of UK exams will be available over the weekend as well as the chance to get tickets to the world famous RSGB raffle.

Icom UK’s Marketing Manager, Ian Lockyer, has completed 3 gruelling athletic challenges for charity. Throughout the last 9 months, Ian has completed the London Marathon, a double marathon in the 24 Hour Challenge and the London Triathlon. In total, Ian has raised £365 for charity which is being divided between the RNLI, Children with Cancer and the Kent Association for the Blind. Ian’s challenges were remarkable because he had only learnt to swim at the start of the year.
Ian Lockyer said, ‘I would like to say a big thank you for everyone’s support in helping me to achieve my goals. I have had some really great life experiences on the way and have got over my phobia of the water. Next year, I want to move up to the Olympic distance in Triathlon which is 1 mile swim, 24 mile bike and 6 mile run. I also want to take some of my Icom work mates from London to Brighton on their bikes and hopefully get them fitter along the way. ‘

Icom America Announces Subsidiary in Brazil October 11, 2012

Icom America announces the establishment of Icom Brazil, a subsidiary with headquarters in Belo Horizonte, the capital city of Minas Gerais state. The initial objective of Icom Brazil, or “ICOM do Brasil Radiocomunicação Ltda,” focuses on the public safety industry with Brazil’s government. Additionally, Icom Brazil will help existing distributors expand their dealer networks nationwide.
The creation of Icom Brazil will allow the radio manufacturer to solidify its brand visibility in an emerging South American market. According to the Central Intelligence Agency’s “World Factbook” publication, Brazil became the world’s seventh largest economy in terms of gross domestic product (GDP-PPP) in 2011. Brazil has experienced positive growth in recent years and has received global attention, including the country’s hosting of the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics. “Icom recognizes Brazil’s rising potential in the global market,” says Muu Yamamoto, Icom Marketing Manager – Latin America. “We look forward to investing our efforts and resources in this country.”

Icom UK will again be attending the biggest Amateur Radio Show in the UK. The National Hamfest will take place at the George Stephenson Pavilion, Newark & Notts Showground, Lincoln Road, Winthorpe, Newark NG24 2NY on Friday 28th September & Saturday 29th September 2012.
More than 3000 visitors came through the doors last year and this year’s show is planned to be bigger than ever. Icom UK will be showcasing its complete range of Amateur radio, D-Star and receiver equipment.
Icom plan to show a sample of a new, revolutionary, HF/VHF/UHF Amateur Radio Mobile Transceiver, IC-7100. This exciting new transceiver was first shown at the Tokyo Ham Fair only last month. A first for an Icom transceiver, the IC-7100 is designed to cover the 70MHz band in European versions. To maintain its commitment to D-STAR, all versions of the IC-7100 will come with standard D-STAR DV mode.

As well as having a full range of Amateur radio, D-Star and receiver equipment on the stand, Icom UK will be demonstrating its latest RC-28 IP remote control system. The RC-28 allows a user to control selected Icom HF Amateur radio transceivers through an IP Network. This new system includes remote control software together with remote control USB encoder which provides users with a radio operator’s style interface for controlling this new software product.

The biggest D-STAR QSO Party in the world begins this Friday offering all those who take part the chance to win one of seven ID-51A/E Dual band D-STAR Handheld transceivers!
Taking place from 0:00 on the 21st of September to 24:00 on the 23rd of September 2012 (UTC), the goal of the contest is to encourage D-Star operators to make contact with other D-Star operators in as many different countries as possible by using D-STAR repeaters. The more countries a user can contact during the time period, the more entries in the prize pool they will have.
Participation in the contest is via DV mode (28MHz/ 50MHz/ 145MHz/ 430MHz/ 1200MHz (Simplex operation on 28MHz and 50MHz) ). All operators who submit an approved log will be eligible for the draw and seven winners will be randomly selected to each win a prize. To qualify for the draw:
• You need make a contact through at least one repeater in your own country.
• Contact D-STAR users in 5 foreign countries and you will double your chances to win a prize.
• Contact D-STAR users in 10 foreign countries and you will triple your chances to win a prize.
• Contact D-STAR users in more than 20 foreign countries and you will quadruple your chances to win a prize.

Icom Showcases Latest Innovative Marine Communication Products at the PSP Southampton Boat Show 2012 (Stand H021) September 13, 2012

On show will be Icom’s new range of marine VHF radios including the IC-M91D, Icom’s first GPS Marine VHF/DSC Handheld and IC-M423 Compact Fixed Mount VHF/DSC. Both models share a new common user interface and noise cancelling technology that are unequalled in VHF models today. Also being showcased for the first time is Icom’s new Marine Commander Navigation System.
New to the Southampton Boat Show will be Icom’s line of intuitive menu-driven radios with advanced features such as active noise cancelling, Digital Selective Calling (DSC) and global positioning system (GPS). Ian Lockyer, Marketing Manager of Icom UK, said, ‘We are confident that our end users will appreciate the easy to use interface in the IC-M423, that is the only fixed model on the market to meet the new ETSI standards.’
Icom’s latest marine line integrates an intuitive “soft-key” interface permitting faster access to radio functions. Other practical features include enhanced audio quality and GPS functionality. Safety elements are built-in, such as DSC which allows users to send an emergency message at the touch of a button. Icom’s newest marine radios receive an IPX7 Submersible rating allowing water immersion for 30 minutes at a depth of 1 metre.
Also on show will be the Icom Marine Commander Navigation System. The system integrates AIS data from a compatible transponder or receiver, radar information and displays data from a sounder/fish finder. In addition, it also has the capacity to receive DSC callls, display mapping/cartography, display real-time fuel consumption, engine speed, depth and temperature, and has provisions for four on-board cameras to be connected (via RCA connectors). Up to two 12.1 inch TFT displays can be connected to the Marine Commander’s main processor.
