Smaller watercraft such as RIB’s, Jetskis and kayaks play an important role in providing safety support for many water based events….the IC-M71 Marine VHF http://www.icomuk.co.uk/IC-M71/Handheld_VHF_Marine_Radio is normally the preference for such users.

Darrell Bosley (Icom UK Commercial Product Specialist) and Ian Lockyer (Icom UK Marketing Manager) will be taking part in the London to Brighton bike ride to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation. The event takes place on Sunday, June 16 2013 and will be the first time the duo have taken part in this grand event and are looking forward to it. Darrell said, ‘It seemed like a good idea at the time. Can’t believe we are starting so early…even before the pubs open! However, on a serious note, we have all seen at first hand how friends and family suffer but hopefully events like this can help develop awareness, as well as funds for this debilitating disease.‘
You can support Darrell for this very worthwhile charity by visiting his charity page: http://www.justgiving.com/darrell-bosley
The British Heart Foundation is the nation’s heart charity. Every day they save lives through pioneering research, providing vital information to help people reduce their own heart health risks, campaigning for change and supporting and caring for heart patients.
Everyone at Icom UK wishes both Darrell and Ian the very best of luck – and we look forward to hearing of their success and seeing the photos.
Both Darrell and Ian send their special thanks to John Turner (Icom Amateur Product Specialist) for providing support on the day…they really do appreciate his assistance.

D-Star success for Jane Tomlinson Hull 10k May 21, 2013
Posted by Icom UK in Amateur Radio.add a comment

On Sunday morning, approximately 3,500 runners took to the streets of Hull’s historic city centre for the Jane Tomlinson Hull 10k.
Logistical support to the event was provided by Yorkshire 4×4 Response, using D-Star communications provided by members of the East Yorkshire Emergency Communications Group.
The combination of Icom IC-E92D and GPS microphones allowed vehicles to be tracked during the several handovers, as the runners crossed major roads and took to the pedestrain only areas of the city.
From a communications viewpoint, the exercise proved the value of using UHF in an urban area; with the D-Star signal surviving the multiple reflections from tall buildings obscuring the line-of-sight path, with trouble-free communications throughout the course.
RYA REMINDS OF THE NEED TO WEAR KILLS CORDS May 17, 2013
Posted by Icom UK in Marine Radio.add a comment
Following the publication of the Marine Accident Investigation Branch’s Safety Bulletin 1/2013 today the RYA is reminding everyone driving powerboats and RIBs to wear a kill cord.
In its bulletin the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) says that the RIB involved in the tragic accident in Padstow over the May Bank Holiday was fitted with a kill cord but that it was not attached to the driver at the time.
The RYA echoes the MAIB’s safety bulletin message and reminds all owners and operators of such vessels fitted with a kill cord to:
- Test them regularly to ensure that the engine stops when the kill cord mechanism is operated
- Make sure that the cord is in good condition
- Always attach the cord to the driver, ideally before the engine is started, but certainly before the engine is put in gear
- When changing drivers it is strongly recommended that you should turn the engine off before transferring the kill cord from one driver to the other. The engine should only be restarted when the kill cord has been securely attached to the new driver.
Richard Falk, RYA Training Manager and Chief Examiner said: “The kill cord serves only one vital purpose, to stop the engine when the driver moves away from the controls for whatever reason.”
“No one wants a repeat of this tragic accident and so the RYA is urging everyone driving a powerboat, RIB or personal watercraft to make sure that they attach the kill cord around their leg before they switch on their engine.”
“RYA safety guidance and training advocates the wearing of a kill cord. In this type of boat it is just as important as wearing a lifejacket or buoyancy aid. Both are there to protect you”.
For more information on using a kill cord and how to attach it properly go to www.rya.org.uk/go/killcord.
You can read the MAIB Safety Bulletin 1/2013 on the MAIB website at www.maib.gov.uk/home.
The purpose of an MAIB Safety Bulletin is to communicate any safety lessons that have been identified from an incident prior to the full report on an investigation being published.

Radio Society of Great Britain Centenary Day May 16, 2013
Posted by Icom UK in Amateur Radio.add a comment
2013 marks the Centenary of the Radio Society of Great Britain (RSGB) the 20,000 strong body that represents Britain’s radio amateurs. The RSGB is pleased to announce that its Patron, HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, KG, KT will be joining the Society for Centenary Day at the National Radio Centre at Bletchley Park on 5 July 2013. He will meet with Members and invited guests before unveiling a plaque to commemorate the Centenary.A number of activities, talks and displays are planned in which RSGB Members and members of the public can take part during the day.
Background
Starting life as the London Wireless Club in 1913, the RSGB has since its inception brought together people with an interest in radio communication. The Society provided the framework within which the pioneers and experimenters of radio technology have thrived.
RSGB members have been at the forefront of many of the major contributions made to radio technology. For example, the development of Radio intelligence, television, radar development, re-designing the Iron lung and the discovery of Pulsars all involved radio amateurs. The influence of amateurs across science, technology, medicine and the communications industry has been huge.
One hundred years later, the RSGB still provides a platform for the exchange of ideas amongst experimenters and, although the technologies may have changed, the amateur spirit has not. With this background the many thousands of radio amateurs in the UK are proud to celebrate the Centenary of their organisation, the Radio Society of Great Britain (RSGB).
The Future
Whilst Centenary celebrations are a time to reflect on our past achievements, there can be no question of “resting on our laurels”. Amateur radio today is as relevant and vibrant as it has ever been and the RSGB takes very seriously its responsibility to work with partners around the world in providing leadership to safeguard and develop amateur radio over the next 100 years.
Worldwide
There are around 4 million amateur radio callsigns worldwide, with 78,000 on issue in the UK. Radio amateurs around the world are required to pass an examination before gaining their licence. There is an international body governing amateur radio called the International Amateur Radio Union. The RSGB is a founder member of the IARU, which was formed in 1925.
Congratulations
The Icom family offers its congratulations to the Radio Society of Great Britain reaching 100 years in representing the interests of the Amateur Radio Community in the Great Britain.
This wonderful achievement would not have been reached without the outstanding commitment of so many volunteers who have worked tirelessly for the RSGB over the past 100 years.
