After a series of heats throughout the summer, the Icom UK sponsored Chatham and Clarendon Greenpower racing team and their car Aluuuuuminium were ranked 30th out of 177 entrants in the qualification table for the Greenpower national final.
Team leader Lester Edmeades, Chatham and Clarendon school’s Physics teacher said, ‘The Greenpower national final saw 75 qualifying cars line up on the grid of the Goodwood motor circuit in Sussex for the four hour race. The weather forecasters were spot on. The rain arrived and the heavy downpour continued through the day. Undaunted we lined up on the starting grid with our first driver behind the wheel and a further four waiting their turn’.
Lester said, ‘Over the four hours we gradually climbed up the racing order with the car and well-practiced drivers performing faultlessly. The difficult conditions caused many cars to suffer breakdowns because of the heavy rain. As the chequered flag fell at 5pm, we came in in 19th position which was a credit to the car drivers, pit crew and builders’.
He added, ‘We would particularly like to thank our sponsors ICOM for the use of radios which makes such a difference to our communication with the car’.
